Should it be the Fighting French?

Here's a question for all of you die hard college football fans, or for those of you who like to know stuff just to know it: Since the Notre Dame Cathedral is in France, why is the University known as the "Fighing Irish" with a cute little leprechaun? I really am curious if there's an interesting story behind it or what. Anyway, somebody let me know if you know something.

A philosphical question indeed!

Come to think of it, that is very strange that they are irish and from notre dame!
